Collecting scrap metal in manual way is a thing of the past. Scrap metal balers and shears are replacing physical labor. This is explained, first of all, by the fact that in the absence of manufacturability, the risk of loss of profitability, low purity and clogging of scrap increases. As a result, the human factor can seriously hit the wallet of an entrepreneur, while the availability of the necessary scrap collecting equipment (baler or scrap metal shears) guarantees the absence of errors in the processing of scrap metal. This has long been understood by the end consumers of secondary scrap metal – metallurgical plants. They now prefer machine-processed products. Analyzing this dynamics, we can say with confidence that the mechanization of scrap collection is inevitable. And that is why today Balta-press sets a task for itself –bringing the companies processing secondary metals of the CIS to a new, technological level. This will allow the partners of Balta-press to take strong positions in the world market and increase the profitability of the scrap collection site and the industry as a whole.

The example of Magnum LLP can confirm the real advantages of mechanization of scrap collection. A company from Kazakhstan purchased equipment from Balta-press last year. After 8 months of work of balers at three sites of the enterprise, the founder of Magnum Artemy Filippov is ready to share the results.
- So, tell us, how long have you been on the market and how did the history of your company begin?
- I have been in this business since 1999, I started as a hired worker. It should be noted that 20 years ago everything was like in the Stone Age: only one scales worked, the scrap metal was unloaded entirely by hand, then it was loaded into boxes by truck crane and sent to China. The mechanization of processes was then equal to zero. Today, our work is greatly facilitated by German reloaders of the Fuchs and Atlas brands, as well as balers of Balta-press.
- What are you guided by when choosing equipment?
- Each volume requires its own equipment. For better cutting, scrap metal shears are optimal. This is an expensive equipment designed for large volumes – from 3000 tons per month. We opted for the balers because they are much cheaper and offer smaller volumes. If we compare the equipment we have chosen with their analogues, the Chinese equipment has a slightly longer loading chamber (by 200mm). But the Russian manufacturer, and Balta-press in particular, allows us to win on the service, so we didn’t waste our energy and bought three balers at once. Besides, I am impressed by the approach of Balta-press. The company is serious about what it does.

- It turns out that now you have actively begun to invest in technical equipment of the sites, what is the reason for this?
- In our business, you need to think several steps ahead, constantly modernize the processes, otherwise you will become uncompetitive. If we don’t develop – we will die out like mammoths. The technical equipment gives us fast unloading and loading of scrap metal, as well as reduces the processing and sorting time. Technically equipped sites, first of all, save time and, as a result, money. With operational work, you do not need to pay for the down time of a rented wagon, overpay to the owner and Russian Railways. All of these benefits come from speed.
- If we talk about the situation in Russia and the CIS, what problem of scrap metal collectors can be called the main one today?
- Both in Russia and in Kazakhstan the following is happening – the quality of the material decreases. Now scrap metal is 80% lightweight, i.e. not scrap from mechanical engineering, not old equipment, but auto parts, cans. All this makes it difficult to load a 60-ton wagon. We need a high density. It was provided by the balers purchased from Balta-press. The equipment made it possible to increase the efficiency of the sites by 30%. As well as profitability. At the same time, the cost of logistics has decreased – we save about 20% on transportation from the site to the plant. It is possible to avoid unnecessary costs thanks to the growing volumes. Where previously there were 20 wagons, today there are 30.
- Tell us about the advantages of pressed scrap in more detail, in figures.
- Saving 300-500 rubles from each ton is minimal. Simple mathematics: we take a wagon and load it not by 50 tons, but by 65. It turns out, one wagon gives additional 15 tons. With ten wagons, the advantage will already be 150 tons, that is, extra 2-3 wagons. They would have to be rented, paid for the railway tariff.
- Another difficulty is clogged bales, how do you manage to solve this problem?
- There is no secret. The bales will stay clean if the scrap is not loaded with the ground. Of course, there are natural clogs in the form of rust or paint, but there are only 0.3-0.5% of them. The rest depends on the operator, as well as the quality of the scrap metal in general. After all, pressed scrap is taken only from trusted suppliers. Unscrupulous people may have concrete or earth in the material.
